Use of "Wa" and "Fa"

as you see i'm freshly new on the lqtoronto forum .
All praises and thanks be to Allah who gives me the opportunity to find such a source for learning arabic. I'm also grateful to Dr. Abdur Rahim's for his huge effort on spreading arabic teaching and all brothers and sisters that do contribute to the lqtoronto website. Thanks a lot a enjoy the video lectures !


I have question regarding the use of hourouf al 3atf "Wa" and "fa". Is there any grammatical rules that could help me in making the distinction between both (i mean not only in the sense but in "where and when" one has to be used for instance). I would like to know which rules govern the use of both. Actually, when learning Quran sometimes i don't remember whether "Wa" is used or "Fa" and that makes me confused (especially at the begining of some verses ). An anwser would probably help me in improving my learning.

The only thing i know is that:

" "Wa" indicates grouping, but doesn’t specify order or timing whereas "Fa" indicates the order (like thumma), but also shows that the second event happened immediately after the first." (source: http://www.ilmfruits.com/category/arabic/arabic-grammar)

But is there any cases for instance where one could not be used and could not be replaced by its alternative.

Your knowledge of these conjunctions is perfect.
ف and then, example: دَخَلَ بِلالٌ فَحامِدٌ , "Bilal came in and then Hamid."
وَ and, example: جَاءَ بِلالٌ وَحَامِدٌ , "Bilal and Hamid came."
ثُمَّ then, example: أَكَلَ، ثُمَّ شَرِبَ , "He ate, then he drank.

I know, this does not add much to what you already know. But that is what it is. You would use one or other depending on what you want to convey.
